summer weddings

summer is wedding season...this year we have been invited to attend our close friend's daughter's outdoor wedding...i can hardly wait for all the great food and laughter...i can hear my friend mike now...i have started some placemats for Jennifer and Adam's new house they just had built and to celebrate their wedding...stars are always my favourites...i love to lay outdoors and look at the night sky...stars are my theme for the placemats... i started out with a large scrap book...the newsprint paper works well for paper piecing...i drew a rectangle and then put 5 dots around the 4 sides...i then drew lines between every second dot and whohoo i had a star...i then figured out where i would need to cut the pieces apart to get straight lines to sew them back together...

i then estimated how much fabric i would need for each piece...what i discovered is after i cut out each A, B, C, D part...if i fold the piece on the line between 1a and 2a i will be able to see how much fabric i need cut...these 2 pieces will lay one on top of each other and i can see clearly how that angle works...stitched them together in the right order...well most of the time anyway...added a 1/4 inch where i needed it...
going with the kaffe fassett polka dot fabrics which i got with my gift certificate from the fat quarter shop...thx to sewcalgal
here they are...not all sewn yet but a work in progress

work in progress...lucky stars BOM

this is my lucky stars BOM july block...really enjoying this way of working...i have never done a BOM before...something to look forward to each month...

because i always seem to be looking for new things to start...i took a old chair that is very distressed from a few years outside...i spray painted it a strange gold orange colour...it is a flat paint and did not cover all the evils this chair has...distressed and recycled furniture is in style right now...so i made another july lucky star to use as a cushion cover...i made a pattern of the chair seat by drawing around it...using a piece of memory foam...will keep you posted....
this time i did not add the grey around the star shape...i would like it more if the inner fabrics had some texture to them...but with each block i learn something...this time i did use dark, medium and light...
this is my on going work in progress...my beautiful daughter Elizabeth and her daughter Miss O
those smiles just warm my heart...

enjoying the time in my studio

i have been enjoying my precious hours i get in my sewing studio these past several weeks...kitchen renos are almost done and now i have some free time outside of work i find i am gravitating back to my sunny upstairs room...part of my lack of time has been due cleaning out closets and dresser drawers...i found this little Christmas cross stitch i did years ago...throwing it out just seemed wrong wrong wrong...
so i decided that i would make it into a pillow case for my granddaughter for Christmas
i added some borders and started in with some FMQ quilted free hand feathers with wonder thread "Aurifil"
here she is helping quilt her pillowcase...hands safely back from the needle...you can never be too young to start learning to quilt...

very carefully removing those pins...her favourite job pulling pins and putting them in the magnetic pin holder..
this is going to be a bright cheery pillowcase to lay her head on christmas eve....

upcycling a table

i love second hand stores...must be a memory of my childhood...my Uncle Clarence had a secondhand store...we hung out there lots... the smell of oiled board floors still lingers in the far reaches of my brain...as of late i have been haunting them again...
i found this great little oriental inspired table...i love the look of it but i am striving for a more fresh look in my house...
i love the look of old cutwork table pieces...so i set out to quilt it...inspired by Cindy Needham...using of course my favourite Aurifil thread
 at work on the piece
close up view of the quilted piece
i then removed the top of table...spray painted it white...sanded it so the black shows through giving it a distressed look...and reattached the table top to the legs
here is the final piece hanging out with my pink chair, my "sky horses" quilt and some floral china pieces...looking more like something from my grandmother's house then from the orient...the whole process took about 2 days to complete..
