quilting napkins and doilies

cindy needham is guest teacher for june on sewcalgal's free motion quilting challenge...she quilts whole cloth quilts...sometimes using old linen...so i hit the second hand store looking for pieces to quilt...i came away with some napkins, doilies, and a wonderful blue silk scarf...off to the machine i went and several hours later this is what emerged...
the work in progress...i used that ruler for straight lines...worked but have to be careful...might try to use a curved ruler next

i sandwiched a napkin with soy batting and 100% cotton for backing...i then set about doodling with the machine...it used my favourite thread...aurifil 50wt

the finished product...lots of work but lots of fun....

next i sandwiched a crocheted doily...100% cotton for backing, wool batting...then 100% cotton...doily on top...and organza on top of the doily... using auriful thread again (love that thread)
sewing the runner...i think it would have been more difficult to quilt without the organza to hold the doily in place...also i think the doily being on heavy cotton thread would have risen up around the quilting...

the finished product...love the way it looks hanging over the picnic table...wood and lace...may even use it the next time we use have people over for supper outside...i quilted the entire piece with feathers...used the february challenge by diane gaudynski for inspiration and just free formed those feathers....
now for the blue silk scarf

practice pieces for june free motion quilting

really enjoying all the free motion quilting that i have been doing...still working on getting that horse quilt binding finished...but in the mean time i have taken a little break and sewed together the practice pieces from the last several months...

i'll add the rest as the months go on...will use one of the bonus tutorials for a piece and then the tutorial on borders to complete it...i like it...i like the white and the colours...the back is similar as i put it together with quilt as you go method

now back to getting that binding finished

free motion quilting challenge june 2012

i have been doing lots of free motion quilting this month as i have been working on one of my horse quilts...the quilting is done and now all that is left is to finish the hand sewing of the binding...looking forward to getting the quilt finished and seeing it on my guest bed...i have also been doing lots of doodling...often at work in my spare moments...

doodle from work

have really been enjoying
working on these doodles...relaxing work for sure...just hum and doodle

finally when i finished the quilting of my quilt i had time to sit at my machine and doodle with fabric and thread...hum to myself and doodle...when i first started quilting i would sing to myself...strange...i sang "oh holy night"...sometimes i still sing as i quilt...relaxing and distracting....

l
my june piece...but why did i pick these colours...a moment of insanity
a different view of the work

yep my colour choice was definitely a moment of insanity

a smaller piece i did to become part of the quilt i am making with my practice squares...

doodle on...

a sunday drive in the woods

my husband and i went for a drive today in the boreal forest which surrounds the town we live in...the sun peaked out thru the clouds...but the wind kept the temp low...we turned off the highway on to the jackpine alley forest service road...just off the highway we found some old building slowly returning to the earth...it always make me wonder about the people that lived in old houses and where they are now...
